About CoolCove

A small studio in Denver, quietly rethinking what a portable air conditioner can be.

We started in 2019 with a single question: why is a category of appliance that everyone owns still so loud, so inefficient, and so frustrating to live with? Six years and three prototypes later, CoolCove is our answer.

The CoolCove engineering team in their design workshop

The story behind the unit.

The first portable air conditioner was invented in 1938, and for nearly ninety years the basic shape of the category barely changed. A box. A single hose. A compressor that screamed when it worked hard. Every apartment dweller we knew either lived with one of these boxes, lived with a window unit they installed with a partner and a stepladder, or simply sweated through August.

Our founder, Elena Voss, spent five years as a mechanical engineer at a major HVAC corporation before leaving to start CoolCove in a converted warehouse in Denver's RiNo district. Her brief to the small team she assembled was simple: design a portable climate appliance that a person could lift with one hand, plug into any outlet, and live with year-round — without the acoustic, aesthetic, and electrical compromises that had defined the category for decades.

What we believe.

We believe the best appliance is the one you forget is there. We believe energy efficiency is a design principle, not a marketing bullet point. We believe a unit that lives in your bedroom should look as considered as the rest of the room. And we believe that customer service, when done well, is a long, slow, profitable relationship with the people who bought the thing you made.

01 / Calm

Quiet by design

Every decibel matters. A viscoelastic damping cradle, a floating louver motor, and a slow-spinning fan profile keep the sound floor below a library reading room.

02 / Care

Efficiency first

Inverter drive, R32 refrigerant, and adaptive eco-mode trim seasonal energy use by roughly a third versus the fixed-speed category average.

03 / Craft

Honest materials

Recycled aluminium chassis, glass touch panel, repairable sub-assemblies. We publish a service manual and stock spare parts for seven years.

How we got here.

2019

CoolCove founded

Elena Voss leaves her corporate HVAC role and assembles a five-person founding team in a converted warehouse in Denver's RiNo district.

2021

First prototype: CoolCove Mark I

A hand-built 15-unit pilot run is tested in apartments across Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The team learns more from the failures than the successes.

2023

Mark II ships to first 1 200 customers

The current form factor is finalised: dual-hose, inverter-driven, R32. The wait list stretches to twelve weeks within a month of launch.

2025

European expansion

CoolCove opens a fulfilment centre in Rotterdam and completes CE certification for the entire product line.

2026

Today

Twelve people, 38 countries, one product line, and a seven-year parts commitment. We are still deliberately small.
